If you’ve been following our blog and/or FB posts, you know we’ve been watching a bathroom facelift start to unfold. The process of staining and updating the vanity has already begun and now we are onto choosing hardware to help polish off the new look. In this instance, because we’re working on a bathroom remodel, we’re going to focus on choosing new hardware for the vanity. (We’ll reserve kitchen and door hardware for another day, although they follow some of the same rules!)
Like in other areas of your home, it is important to keep your style and existing decor in mind when choosing hardware. Other items worth noting are, of course, your budget, the hardware’s size/scale, and the installation process.
Pulls and knobs are traditionally the most common choices in either an oil-rub, satin, brass, or chrome finish. Knobs are typically used for drawers and pulls are most often used on cabinets. It is important to note though that this is not a decorating rule! You could use all knobs if you wanted to or all pulls on your cabinets. It’s up to you! What is important is that your knobs/pulls complement each other in style, size, and color. For example, you would not want a modern/contemporary pull put together with a rustic looking knob.
Other things that are important to consider when choosing your knobs/pulls are the weight and material of the piece. Look at the reviews from previous buyers to see what their likes and dislikes were regarding the product. In addition, be willing to shop around outside of box stores like Home Depot or Menards as well as upper end home decor store such as Rejuvenation. There are knobs and pulls available for purchase on sites you would not originally consider looking at, like Etsy for instance.
While many people like to keep their hardware consistent throughout their home, others may take the opportunity to do something unique to a particular room. What is important is to find what works for you and your home.
